Talk about totally unexpected! Just found a Yellow-crowned night-heron at 3261 Fulton Co Road F between Roads 3 and 4. It was feeding in the large lawn of the residence there. A picture is posted at the Ohio Rare Birds FaceBook page.

The heron was back at the same spot this morning. I watched it from 6:30 until about 7:45 when it flew out of sight to the back of the property. It's interesting to watch the Yellow-crowned feed as it is reminiscent of a robin. It moves slowly through the grass, frequently cocking its head to the side within a few inches of the ground, apparently listening for prey. It then jabs its bill into the grass. At least a couple of times, it caught something dark and gangly that was quickly down its gullet. My best guess is that small toads (and maybe grubs?) are its victims.

Please remember that this bird is visiting private property, and birders are likely to attract the attention of the owners.
