More details will be provided later, but another successful Toledo CBC was wrapped up today. It looks like we will end up just shy of the century mark. Among the 99 species recorded, the rarest was undoubtedly the California gull that I found among a large group of gulls sitting on the ice of the Ottawa River along Shoreland Drive. This is a first Toledo CBC record and a long overdue first-ever Toledo area record. A few other highlights from the count included Cackling goose (2 at Detwiler Golf Course), Red-necked grebe (Cullen Park), Snowy owl (Bayshore Power Plant dikes), Virginia Rail (2 - first Toledo CBC record since 1980), and Red crossbill (one at Woodlawn Cemetery). Thanks to all who helped out.

Darn. We finished just a single species shy of 100 species. A Ross's goose along Teachout Road near Corduroy Road was just a tad east of the count circle. Here are the highlights from the December 17 Toledo CBC...

* Snow goose 4 - Maumee River at I-75 bridge, 3 in Rossford section of count
* Cackling goose 2 - Detwiler Golf Course
* Common merganser 8,531 - second only to 10,757 in 1991
* Red-breasted merganser 4,227 - beat previous high count of 2,037 in 1992
* Horned grebe 8 - Cullen Park; beat previous count record of 4 from 2006
* Red-necked grebe - Cullen Park; just third count record
* Bald eagle 67 - just one off count record
* Virginia rail 2 - Mallard Club Marsh; first count record since 1980
* Sandhill crane 26
* Killdeer
* California gull - adult on Ottawa River at 2197 Shoreland Drive; first Toledo area record
* Lesser black-backed gull 51 - beat previous count record of 39
* Snowy owl - Bayshore Power Plant (off limits)
* Long-eared owl 3 - 2 at Pearson Metropark, 1 in southern part of circle
* Northern saw-whet owl - Maumee Bay State Park
* Merlin 4 - 2 at Woodlawn Cemetery, 2 at Ottawa Park
* Eastern meadowlark - Pearson Metropark
* Red crossbill - Woodlawn Cemetery
