It was plenty cold today, but bright sunshine allowed participants some great viewing conditions. No rarities were found, but waterfowl were plentiful with 21 species seen. Probably most noteworthy were the numbers of Northern pintail. I estimated 1,100 for the day including 800 or so in the new Howard Marsh Metropark (viewed from the Metzger Marsh causeway). I can say with certainty that I haven't seen that many pintails locally in many, many years - maybe ever. Thousands of scaup (probably mostly Lesser) were out on the lake and bay. A couple of Rough-legged hawks hunting and hovering over Adam Grimm Prairie at ONWR capped off a nice morning.
