Please note: TNA’s monthly programs for 2018 have moved to the Ward Pavilion at Wildwood Metropark.

Lake Erie Birding - field trip

Weather dictates the movement of birds so much; it’s difficult to say what might grace the Lake Erie shore in late March. Ducks will certainly be present, and some of the earliest arriving songbirds and other migrants should be seen. Southwest winds would almost guarantee a flight of hawks along the lake. Meet leader Matt Anderson at the Maumee Bay State Park campground parking lot at 8:30 am.

When: Sunday, March 11, 2018, 8:30 am until about noon

Where: Maumee Bay State Park campground parking lot

Exploring Saipan's Avifauna and Natural History - monthly program

Annie Crary traveled to Saipan as a bird banding biologist for the Institute for Bird Populations and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Division of Fish and Wildlife during the spring and summer of 2009 and fall of 2010 and ran six banding stations in different habitats on the island in order to determine molt sequence and timing of Saipan’s resident, nonmigratory landbirds, and to piece together information about breeding seasonality. Saipan is a small island that rests along the Marianas Trench 136 miles north of Guam in the Pacific Ocean. It has 13 species of native nonmigratory landbirds and four nonnative species, as well as numerous seabirds and shorebirds. Join us as we explore the rich natural and human history of a tropical paradise. Swim with colorful reef creatures, meet the birds of Saipan, learn the intricacies of avian molt, and discover new, undocumented molt patterns.

When: Thursday, March 15, 2018, 7:00 pm

Where: Ward Pavilion at Wildwood Metropark, 4830 Central Avenue, Toledo.

Urban Birding I: Exploring the Middlegrounds - field trip

The Toledo Metroparks keep adding to an already impressive collection of parks. The Middlegrounds took a while to develop, but it appears it was worth the wait. And if TNA is going to have a field trip in the heart of the city of Toledo, you know urban birder Sherry Plessner is down to the lead the way. Ducks will probably be a main focus along the river. Meet Sherry at the Middlegrounds parking lot at 1 p.m.

When: Saturday, March 24, 2018, 1:00 pm

Where: Middlegrounds Metropark, 111 Ottawa St., Toledo

Herping at La Su An - field trip

Timing is everything when it comes to searching for amphibians. Available habitat and temperature will certainly be factors. For this field trip we invite people out to Williams County to explore Lake La Su An Wildlife Area. Leader Michelle Turner will work to provide attendees with possible looks at species such as spotted and tiger salamanders, among any other critters that pop up. Michelle is a super nice and knowledgeable leader with a fish and wildlife background. Provided the weather cooperates, we’re confident she will be able to spark some interest in herpetology. To get to La Su An, take US 20 west into Williams County and turn north/right onto County Road 7. When the road ends at County Road R, turn west/left and meet at the large parking lot next to the lake. We’ll be out until about 12:00 p.m.

When: Saturday, March 31, 2018, 9:30 am until about noon

Where: Lake La Su An Wildlife Area, Montpelier, Ohio

Just quick note about this weekend’s field trip to La Su An. It will be a go rain or shine. Leader Michelle Turner has asked participants to wear rain gear and muck boots. Sterilization of boots with a bleach mixture is recommended.
