I got another crazy-good yard bird this morning, April 12, when a winter plumaged RED-THROATED LOON floated past our property on the Maumee River. It was still there, just upstream from Otsego Rapids, at 11 am. It obligingly spent some time in Wood County waters, thereby earning a spot on the county list. Often fowl on the river will float down toward the rapids then fly by back upriver to do the same thing all over again. I will post again if it seems to be hanging in there. Potential viewing sites are Otsego Park and just across from Nazareth Hall on the Wood County and the Otsego Road end on the Lucas side. Beware the muddy road at this spot. This loon is extremely rare in our area with apparently fewer than 5 records.

Wow! Again. The hits keep coming, Tom. This is an exceedingly rare bird locally which has always been perplexing to me considering how it’s seen elsewhere in the state with some regularity.

Loon last seen at 11 am. Apparently continued floating down the river or took flight for parts unknown.
