The December 29 Grand Rapids-Waterville CBC found 64 species, the lowest tally since 2003. The Maumee River was generally disappointing (especially for my group!), yielding only 3 ducks and 2 gulls and no other interesting waterbirds. There were some bright spots, however. Common yellowthroat was found for just the 2nd time ever on the count, Cackling geese were seen, a Ruby-crowned kinglet was tallied, and an interesting group of 6 towhees (all time high) was a highlight in Oak Openings park. Also notable were 3 N. Saw-whet owls, 5 Pileated woodpeckers (ties all time high), 32 Red-headed woodpeckers (2nd highest ever), and a count week Brown thrasher. Thanks to all who participated.
