Just before noon this morning, Nov 13, an adult GOLDEN EAGLE flew over our yard just northeast of Grand Rapids. New yard bird - YAHOO!

You knew that one was a matter of time...but another nice addition for sure!

I wanted to ask you, Matt - how many Golden eagles have you seen over your Whitehouse property?

And Rick, how about your yard?

Tom, I'm never home anymore to see the Golden Eagles going over my yard. Spending most of my time over near MBSP and Ottawa.

Over the years in my yard, probably 7 or 8. On one day, several years ago, I had 3 go over my yard. All 3 within about 15 minutes.

That would take some digging, but I'm going to guess somewhere from 15-20 at our current property and maybe half that at our Oak River Lane property.

That's pretty amazing, Matt. 25-30 years ago, I don't think anyone had any idea that those birds were going by each fall.

Tom, you're right. I don't remember exactly what prompted you to start them up, but the surveys that you and I did for a number of years from our Oak Openings area homes in the early 1990's (?) shed a lot of light, probably for the first time, on the number of raptors passing over western Lucas County each fall. For what it's worth, I birded the Andersons Farm intensively in the 1970's and 1980's. While I occasionally noted good numbers of species like Broad-winged hawks or Red-tailed hawks migrating south, it never quite occurred to me that I was in a good raptor migration corridor...so I didn't spend time scanning the skies as much as I probably should have. As a result, Golden eagles - undoubtedly migrating overhead back then too - never did make it on the Andersons Farm property list. Still on my to list!
