Tour Lake Erie's Newest Coastal Marsh

The Metroparks is offering TNA members an early sneak peak at one of the biggest wetland restoration projects in the country. Located near the Bono curve on Rt. 2, Howard Marsh is on track to open in the Spring of 2018. Three wetland cells comprising over 750 acres have been diked and are nearly ready to flood. Denis Franklin, from the Metroparks, will lead a tour of the park and explain the details that went into the park's design in order to maximize the potential for biodiversity while providing more opportunities for public access than most Lake Erie coastal marshes. It will be nearly impossible to grasp these details once the flood gates are opened so don't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity.
The park entrance is north of Rt 2 on Howard Rd. Meet Denis there at 9am.

Fall Migration at Nona France Quarry

Fall migration is a bit underrated. Sure the colors may not be as vibrant as they are in the Spring, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a good day birding. The main focus will be on hawks. The big broad-winged flight is always a roll of the dice, but perhaps we’ll get lucky. If the raptors don’t pan out, a hike around the quarry may turn up some warblers, vireos, or other small migrants. Join leaders Brandon Brywczynski and Nate Koszicki at the Nona France Quarry at 10am (part of Blue Creek Conservation Area). Access to the parking area is off of Providence Street just south of the Whitehouse Police Department. Take Nona France Park Drive until it dead ends into the parking lot. PIZZA will be ordered around 11am. Please bring your own drinks and a snack to share.

Toxic Blooms in Lake Erie: The Rest of the Story, with Dr. George Bullerjahn of BGSU

Saturday, September 16, 2017, 7pm, Secor Room, Secor Metropark

The toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis was the culprit in the 2017 Toledo Water Crisis, but Microcystis is not the only cyanobacterium that requires attention by water treatment plants.  The filamentous cyanobacterium Planktothrix inhabits nearshore evironments and often yields annual toxic blooms of longer duration. The ecologies of these two organisms are quite different and will likely require different management strategies to mitigate bloom events.  We will discuss factors that promote Microcystis vs. Planktothrix blooms, and how science can inform policies to improve our freshwater supplies.
