James F (Jimmy) Yoder, his sister Laura, his cousin Meryl, and I went to Killbuck and Funk yesterday. Brutal wind kept us in or by the vehicle, but we had several hundred Tundra Swans, 2 Sandhill Cranes, and a Some Scaup sps, Gadwall, Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal, American Wigeon, Bald Eagle, Hooded Mergs at the Observation Platform and along 95. The Eurasian Wigeon was not seen.
Shreve Fish Pond had 2 Trumpeters (residents) and a Canvasback were among some mixed Ducks.
Wilderness Rd had close to a thousand Ring-necked Ducks, and some scattered Scaup.
Canada Geese and Mallards were everywhere. A few Wood Ducks were in the woods.
The Northern Shrike was not found along Funk between Angling and 95, but a protected-from-the-wind pond in a field had a surprising number of various waterfowl that were quite skittish, but fairly close to the road.
Wilderness Road was surprisingly quiet, but in the high water on the opposite side of the road from the peat pit were some Mallards that were being harassed by a female Northern Harrier. She was hunting low in the surrounding grassy areas and would periodically buzz the Mallards and get them stirred up. It was apparent she was just doing it for fun.
Lastly, Valley Road was under water in one spot but we made it down toward Clark Road close enough to see 12 Trees Swallows.
If you go, be aware that there is some high water in some areas. Messner was also impassible.
