Three of my friends and I traveled east hoping to find the Black-tail. This bird was sitting on the far roof not moving for the majority of time that we viewed it. It did lift its wings once briefly, revealing a wide black band on its tail. I expected the bird's mantle to be a much darker shade of gray, so am skeptical. I'm hoping that somebody who has seen this bird can help us out. The pic is a full crop from my friends new 35x optical canon camera, and represents pretty well what we saw through our spotting scopes. Thanks

Looks like possibly a third year Herring Gull, but you are right the BTGU would have a darker mantle approaching Lesser black backed gull. Not the Black-tailled sorry.
