While sifting through eBird to get updates for my winter bird movement maps, I ran across a Snowy Owl sighting that I don’t recall seeing reported on any list-serves. Back on December 19, 2011, Ellen Azotea reported one near Seville, Medina County. Can anyone confirm this sighting? This would make the 9th county and 12th Snowy Owl for Ohio this winter! |

I can't confirm or dispute the sighting, but had an observation. While driving north on I-71 on December 4th, 1-2 miles south of the Medina exit (exit 218) I saw a large, all white bird fly across the highway. It was either a Snowy Owl, or an albino Red-tailed Hawk. I was driving, so I only had short glances as it seemed to slowly fly across the road, then land in a tree on the east side of the highway. Unfortunatley I couldn't see the head, also, the bird was flying in very gusty winds so the flight was affected by the wind (as was my truck). My impression was Snowy Owl, because it was close enough that I thought I saw faint barring, but it was not the right habitat- trees and residential. I mentioned the bird to Doreene Linzelle that day, but didn't report the possible sighting, mainly because it was from the highway and just a bad spot to be looking for birds! The next time I passed through the area I was not driving, and was able to take a quick look around. I realized there was a golf course- but I am not sure if that is a spot for Snowy. It appears the sighting on e-bird was a little further south on I-71.
