Here is a shot of the black vulture that was at East 72nd Street in Cleveland today (2/7). The bird was attacked by a pair of peregrine falcons as it was slowly heading east. Surprisingly, this is not unprecedented. There is a winter record from the same location either last year or the year before.

Excellent John! You need to gather your photos together somewhere online; you'd have an awesome collection of photos.
And thanks for making me regret not going to E. 72nd this morning...knew I should have gone. |

The date I quoted for our sighting on the RBA is incorrect - it was Dec 24, 2007 as John correctly noted in his Ohio-Birds post. I certainly had a deja vu experience when reading John's account, right down to the static with the local Peregrines. Compound these observations with one photographed on the ice at Sandusky Bay last winter, I believe, and there is a definite trend emerging (or just one psychotic bird involved). My guess is that these birds are combing the lakeshore in mid-winter, where is there is often an abundance of carrion available - dead fish, gulls, ducks - providing some easy scraps for the adventurous Black Vulture. That photo is fantastic!
Good birding -

WAY TO GO JOHN!!! You earned your glory as an excellent ornithologist. Keep it up!
Oh, By the while, did we have a record back in the winter of 2007 or 08?
GOOD BIRDING!!!
Your dearest student ornithologist, Cory Vanderbaan.
