I checked 4 rapids areas for shorebirds along the Maumee River this morning, 8/15. Habitat is pretty good, but diversity is still low - just 8 species. Best species found was a single BAIRD'S SANDPIPER at the Jerome Rd. rapids. As long as river levels remain low, it's worth checking your favorite rapid spots.

There were 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS at the Jerome Rd. location this morning, 8/19. I also surveyed 5 other rapids sites this morning. While there is still little diversity, there are quite a few birds to look at. Here are the totals for today: Killdeer 332; Lesser yellowlegs 113; Pectoral sandpiper 56; Least sandpiper 19; Spotted sandpiper 4; Solitary sandpiper 3; Baird's sandpiper 2; Greater yellowlegs 1. Semipalmated and Stilt sandpipers have also been seen within the last 2 days.

Two Baird's sandpipers remained this afternoon at the location noted by Tom in his August 19 post.
